Each year Mr. Mooney appoints a small team of employees to act as the DME United Way Fundraising Committee.
“United Way has become synonymous with caring and helping children, families and individuals. We have a long tradition of helping people with basic needs – food, clothing, shelter and safety – and changing lives through strong, well-managed programs. United Way is also engaging the community to get to the heart of problems.” (Note 1)
Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) is the premier mentoring organization in the country. It is one of the most well-researched and well-developed youth programs in the world. The program has been providing services for over 100 years. The mission of the organization is to help children reach their full potential through professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships with measurable outcomes.
The DME corporate office collectively sponsors approx. thirty (30) children in Rwanda. For each child that is sponsored the company offsets 50% of the monthly contribution. The children live in Kageyo, a refugee re-settlement camp mostly populated by women and children. There are no jobs in the community but the Rwandan government provides shelter for most of the inhabitants. Through DME’s monthly support, children receive an education, school uniform, shoes, basic medical costs and a daily meal. In addition, monthly contributions sponsor each child to attend Christian camp each year.
At the beginning of each school year, Communities in Schools case managers interview school staff and community members to determine the needs of each school. A campus plan is then developed which includes services to meet the individual needs of the students and their families, and the priorities of each school principal. This campus plan determines the extent to which services are provided under each of the components.
